To achieve the climate-neutral goal by 2050, one must realize that it does not only pertain to electricity, but also to the mobility, heating and industry sectors, which up until now have only achieved a marginal CO2 savings. These industries have to increase their share of renewable energies dramatically. Hydrogen technology plays a key role in linking the sectors, which is referred to as sector coupling.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, hydrogen technology helps to tackle another challenge: Long-term storage of renewable energy, regardless of weather conditions.<\/p>\n

\n

Occasionally, wind farms produce excessive amounts of electricity due to high winds, but actual low consumer and industrial demand make it redundant, or a local grid bottleneck occurs. When this happens wind farms are usually shut down. In the future, electrolysis can be used to turn energy into hydrogen, which will then be subsequently be put into long-term storage facilities.<\/p>\n
